Illbilly Productions, inserting itself squarely into the heated Darwinist/creationist debate, delivers an inspired vision of the battle between The Beasties and The Blesseds. The portrayal of this (not quite) age-old conflict of pre-human primates and post-human (?) Jesus freaks may not be historically accurate but it is set to some awesome original music. It also includes an all–Bay Area cast and crew, the hooky (sure to be smash hit) rap single, “Who Begat?” and a cameo by local luminary Sean Hayes as a super laid-back, possibly baked Jesus Christ. As if that weren’t enough, Illbilly will mount Mezzanine’s stage and pleasure us with live music, rap battles, interactive shenanigans and a retrospective of work—from the quintessential rap video, Maximum Wage (“Dammit, I’m gonna own this planet, and run it like you wish a pimp ran it”) to Gabriel: Angel of the Lord excerpts and more. This organized riot of Illbilly’s uproarious world (which seems to revolve around the relationship of hip-hop to God) will culminate in the world premiere of Evolution: The Musical! It’s all in celebration of San Francisco (adopted) sons Andrew Bancroft and Kenny Taylor, the brains behind Illbilly Productions, along with various coconspirators and guests. This event is the latest in the Film Society’s SF 360 Film+Club series taking place at Mezzanine. You must be 21+ to attend.
