Evolution: The Musical!
Tuesday, May 6
7:30 pm
Mezzanine
444 Jessie Street (at Mint)
members $15, general $20
Illbilly Productions, inserting itself squarely into the heated Darwinist/creationist debate, delivers an inspired vision of the battle between The Beasties and The Blesseds in this Live & Onstage spectacular. The portrayal of the (not quite) age-old conflict of pre-human primates and post-human (?) Jesus freaks may not be historically accurate but it is set to some awesome original music. It also includes an all–Bay Area cast and crew, the hooky (sure to be smash hit) rap single, “Who Begat?” and a cameo by local luminary Sean Hayes as a super laid-back Jesus Christ. Illbilly will take to the stage for live music, rap battles, interactive shenanigans and a retrospective of this wonderfully oddball performance group’s oeuvre. This event is the latest in the Film Society’s SF360 Film+Club series taking place at Mezzanine. You must be 21+ to attend.

2261 Fillmore Street (at Clay)

Each year, the Film Society invites a culturally prominent public figure to address complex issues facing the intersecting worlds of contemporary cinema, visual arts, technology, viewership, images and ideas. This year, the State of Cinema address will be delivered by Kevin Kelly, cofounder of Wired magazine and former editor/publisher of the Whole Earth Catalog. From his learned perspective as a digital-age authority, Kelly will speak to—and illustrate via a colorful PowerPoint presentation—the thrills and hazards of our post-cinematic era. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to glean bits—and bytes—of the future of the moving image from a wired wonder.

The Golem with Black Francis
Friday, April 25
9:30 pm
Castro Theatre
429 Castro Street (near Market)
members $15, general $20
The Festival’s annual presentation of a classic silent film accompanied by an original score composed and performed by cutting-edge musicians has been a much-buzzed-about highlight in recent years, with unforgettable events featuring Yo La Tengo having their way with the undersea films of Jean Painlevé and Lambchop brightening F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise to the tune of a suitably eclectic acoustic ensemble. This year, legendary Pixies leader and alt-rock solo artist Black Francis will apply his ghoulishly pop musical idiom to Paul Wegener and Carl Boese’s 1920 German Expressionist masterpiece, The Golem. Set in 16th century Prague, this visual stunner—seen here in a beautiful archival print—tells the tale of a rabbi who fashions a proto-Frankenstein’s monster, sculpted from rough clay and brought to life through sorcery, to protect the Jewish ghetto from a Christian emperor’s decree that it be dissolved. Suffice it to say that nothing goes as planned; fortunately, Black Francis will be on hand to match the monster’s every move with appropriately chilling aural enhancements.
